	कारगिल युद्ध, 1999 में मुष्कोह घाटी के पॉइंट 4875 (फ्लैट टॉप) पर, शत्रु की भीषण स्वचालित गोलीबारी के बीच राइफलमैन संजय कुमार ने असाधारण साहस, शीत-धैर्य और अदम्य संकल्प का परिचय दिया। गंभीर रूप से घायल होने के बावजूद उन्होंने शत्रु के सुदृढ़ सैंगरों पर एकल धावा बोला, हाथों-हाथ की लड़ाई में कई शत्रु सैनिकों को निष्क्रिय किया और कब्ज़ाए गए हथियार से प्रभावी फायर कर आक्रमण की सफलता सुनिश्चित की। इस सर्वोच्च पराक्रम के लिए उन्हें परमवीर चक्र से सम्मानित किया गया।

Honorary Lieutenant (Subedar Major) Sanjay Kumar PVC (born 3 March 1976) is an Indian military officer, and recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military award for his exemplary bravery during Kargil War.

Early life

Sanjay Kumar was born in village Kalol Bakain in Bilaspur District of Himachal Pradesh in a Dogra family of Durga Ram and Bhag Devi. He completed his secondary education from Government Senior Secondary School, Kalol. Prior to joining the army, he worked as a taxi driver in New Delhi. His uncle was in the Indian Army while his second brother is also serving with the Indo Tibetan Border Police. His application was rejected three times before he was finally selected to join the army. He was enlisted in 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles of Indian Army on 26 June 1996.

Military career

Param Vir Chakra Action

On 4 July 1999, as a member of the 13th Battalion, Jammu & Kashmir Rifles, he was the leading scout of a team tasked to capturing Area Flat Top, during the Kargil War. The area was held by Pakistani troops. Having scaled the cliff, the team was pinned down by machine gun fire from an enemy bunker, about 150 meters away.

Kumar, realising the magnitude of the problem and the detrimental effect this bunker would have in the capture of Area Flat Top, crawled alone up the ledge, along a flank, and charged towards the enemy bunker through a there was a bullet rain. Almost instantly he took two bullets in his chest and forearm that left him bleeding profusely.

Though bleeding from the bullet wounds, he continued the charge towards the bunker. In hand-to-hand fighting, he killed three enemy soldiers. He then picked up an enemy machine gun and crept towards the second enemy bunker. The enemy soldiers, taken completely by surprise, were killed by him as they fled their post. Inspired by his act the rest of the platoon charged, assaulted the feature and captured Area Flat Top.

Later career

In February 2022, he received the rank of Subedar Major and is posted to the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla near Pune.

The Param Vir Chakra citation on the official Indian Army website reads as follows:

Rifleman Sanjay Kumar volunteered to be the leading scout of the attacking column tasked to capture area Flat Top of Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley on 4 July 1999. During the attack when enemy automatic fire from one of the sangars posed stiff opposition and stalled the column, Rifleman Sanjay Kumar, realizing the gravity of the situation and with utter disregard to his personal safety, charged at the enemy. In the ensuing hand-to-hand combat, he killed three of the intruders and was himself seriously injured. Despite his injuries, he charged onto the second bunker. Taken totally by surprise, the enemy left behind a Universal Machine Gun and started running.
Rifleman Sanjay Kumar picked up the UMG and killed the fleeing enemy. Although bleeding profusely, he refused to be evacuated. The brave action on his part motivated his comrades and they took no notice of the treacherous terrain and charged onto the enemy and wrested the area Flat Top from the hands of the enemy.
Rifleman Sanjay Kumar displayed most conspicuous gallantry, cool courage and devotion to duty of an exceptionally high order in the face of the enemy.

During his career, he has been awarded with the Param Vir Chakra (Independence Day 1999) for his part in the Operation Vijay.

In popular culture

Kumar's story along with others who were part of the same conflict was portrayed in the film LOC Kargil, in which his character was played by famous Bollywood actor Sunil Shetty.

Legacy

A statue of Sub Maj Sanjay Kumar was unveiled at Param Yodha Sthal, Delhi with 20 other PVC Awardees. One of the Islands of Andaman and Nicobar has been renamed as Sanjay Dweep with other 20 PVC awardees on Parakram Diwas 23 January 2021.

मानद लेफ्टिनेंट (सूबेदार मेजर) संजय कुमार भारतीय सेना के उन विरले परमवीर चक्र विजेताओं में हैं, जिन्होंने कारगिल युद्ध (ऑपरेशन विजय) के दौरान 4 जुलाई 1999 को मुष्कोह घाटी के अत्यंत दुर्गम क्षेत्र पॉइंट 4875 (फ्लैट टॉप) पर असाधारण शौर्य का परिचय दिया। गंभीर रूप से घायल होने के बावजूद, उन्होंने शत्रु की सुदृढ़ चौकियों को ध्वस्त कर लक्ष्य पर कब्ज़ा सुनिश्चित किया। उनके इसी अदम्य साहस, अद्वितीय व्यक्तिगत पराक्रम और कर्तव्यनिष्ठा के लिए उन्हें परमवीर चक्र से सम्मानित किया गया।

प्रारंभिक जीवन एवं पृष्ठभूमि

संजय कुमार का जन्म 3 मार्च 1976 को बकैन गाँव, बिलासपुर ज़िला (हिमाचल प्रदेश) में हुआ। वे श्री दुर्गा राम और श्रीमती भाग देवी के सुपुत्र हैं। प्रारंभिक शिक्षा बिलासपुर में पूर्ण करने के बाद वे दिल्ली चले गए। साधारण ग्रामीण परिवेश में पले-बढ़े संजय कुमार के भीतर अनुशासन, परिश्रम और देशसेवा का संकल्प प्रारंभ से ही दृढ़ था।

सेना में प्रवेश

उन्होंने 26 जून 1996 को भारतीय सेना जॉइन की और 13 जम्मू और कश्मीर राइफल्स (13 JAK RIF) में नियुक्त हुए। यह रेजिमेंट अपने साहस, बलिदान और दुर्गम क्षेत्रों में लड़ने की क्षमता के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। कारगिल संघर्ष में 13 JAK RIF ने अभूतपूर्व वीरता का प्रदर्शन किया।

कारगिल युद्ध, 1999: पॉइंट 4875 (फ्लैट टॉप) की ऐतिहासिक लड़ाई

पॉइंट 4875 सामरिक दृष्टि से अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण था, क्योंकि यहाँ से राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग NH-1A पर निगरानी संभव थी।

4 जुलाई 1999 को, राइफलमैन संजय कुमार को फ्लैट टॉप पर आक्रमण करने वाली टुकड़ी के अग्रिम स्काउट के रूप में चुना गया।

जैसे ही आक्रमण आगे बढ़ा, शत्रु की स्वचालित गोलीबारी ने टुकड़ी की गति रोक दी।
स्थिति की गंभीरता को समझते हुए, संजय कुमार ने व्यक्तिगत सुरक्षा की परवाह किए बिना शत्रु के पहले सैंगर (बंकर) पर धावा बोला।
हाथों-हाथ की लड़ाई में उन्होंने तीन शत्रु सैनिकों को मार गिराया, यद्यपि वे स्वयं गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गए।
घायल अवस्था में भी वे नहीं रुके और दूसरे सैंगर पर आक्रमण किया।
अचानक हुए इस प्रहार से शत्रु घबरा गया और एक यूनिवर्सल मशीन गन (UMG) छोड़कर भागने लगा।
संजय कुमार ने वही हथियार उठाकर भागते शत्रु पर फायर किया।
अत्यधिक रक्तस्राव के बावजूद उन्होंने निकासी से इनकार किया और आगे बढ़ते रहे।

उनकी इस अलौकिक वीरता और दृढ़ संकल्प से प्रेरित होकर उनकी टुकड़ी ने कठिन भू-भाग की परवाह किए बिना धावा बोला और फ्लैट टॉप पर कब्ज़ा कर लिया।

परमवीर चक्र

राइफलमैन संजय कुमार ने शत्रु के सामने अत्यंत विशिष्ट एवं असाधारण वीरता, अदम्य साहस, शीत साहस (cool courage) और कर्तव्य के प्रति सर्वोच्च निष्ठा का परिचय दिया। उनके इसी पराक्रम के लिए उन्हें परमवीर चक्र से सम्मानित किया गया।

सेवा-उत्तर जीवन

संजय कुमार भारतीय सेना में निरंतर सेवा करते हुए सूबेदार मेजर के पद तक पहुँचे। फरवरी 2022 में उन्हें यह पद प्राप्त हुआ और बाद में उन्हें मानद लेफ्टिनेंट की उपाधि प्रदान की गई। उन्होंने राष्ट्रीय रक्षा अकादमी (NDA), पुणे में प्रशिक्षक के रूप में भी योगदान दिया—जहाँ वे भावी सैन्य नेतृत्व को साहस और अनुशासन का जीवंत उदाहरण प्रदान करते रहे।

स्मारक एवं विरासत

राष्ट्रीय युद्ध स्मारक, नई दिल्ली में उनकी प्रतिमा/बस्ट स्थापित।
सैन्य साहित्य, वृत्तचित्रों, कॉमिक्स और फ़िल्म “LOC कारगिल” में उनकी गाथा।
वे आज भारतीय सेना के जीवित परमवीर चक्र विजेताओं में से एक हैं और युवाओं के लिए प्रेरणा का स्रोत हैं।
